CATALOG DESCRIPTION:  Elements of professional engineering practice.  Professionalism, licensing, ethics and ethical issues, intellectual property, contracts, liability, risk, reliability and safety, interdisciplinary  teams and team tools, the role of codes, standards and professional organizations, career, entrepreneurship, human factors and industrial design.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:  The objective of this course is the development of design skills through lectures about elements of the design process.  This course will include seminars on:  professionalism, licensing, ethics and ethical issues; intellectual property, patents and VU patent policies; contracts and liability; risks, reliability, safety and the work environment; career issues including jobs; graduate and professional studies; entrepreneurship; use of the www and other information resources; and others. 

READINGS:   Students are responsible for reading of materials for this course which will be posted at: http://www.bme.vanderbilt.edu/design/  Lecture visuals and/or handouts from many of the presentations will also be available at this site.

TOPICS:   Professionalism, licensing, ethics and ethical issues; intellectual property, patents and intellectual property, contracts; liability; risks, reliability, safety and the work environment; career issues: jobs, graduate and professional studies; entrepreneurship; use of the www and information resources and others.  After the formal lecture session, some time will be devoted to the development of multidisciplinary design teams.  Projects thus selected will fall under our general  design project guidelines.

GRADING:  Grading will be based upon attendance and on several homework exercises based upon several of the lecture topics.  The course grade will be based upon attendance factor multiplied by your grade on the homework exercises.  The attendance factor will be 100%-5% for each unexcused absence.  Most of the class periods will have an in-class or a homework assignment which will be averaged for the term grade, modified by the attendance factor.  Requests for excused absence should be made by e-mail to Professor King within one week of the absence.

ATTENDANCE:  Roll will be taken at most class meetings.  Your attendance is expected at all class meetings and lectures. You should read the text material before class and be prepared to participate in classroom dialogue.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION:  In the event of a fire or other emergency, participants in the design seminar in SC-4309 should exit via the stairs to the Magnolia Courtyard. VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY POLICY FORBIDS REENTRY TO A BUILDING IN WHICH AN ALARM HAS OCCURRED WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION BY VANDERBILT SECURITY. If, in consequence of a disability, you anticipate the need for assistance, please discuss that need with the professor.

When in doubt quote the material and cite the author(s). If you have questions about the application of the Honor Code ask Prof. King for clarification! Ignorance of applicability of the Honor Code does NOT excuse a violation!
