#4.  9/15/2004  Ladder Falls and Designsafe:

Part A:  Hundreds of people each year die or are injured due to falls from ladders.  One example would be a death due to reaching too far while cleaning out gutters, resulting in an imbalance of the ladder and a fall with its consequences.  Using the designsafe software, perform a hazard analysis and risk assessment for the above task.  Use the prompts on the risk assessment page to determine some of your options to decrease this risk.  Print out your risk analysis report, add comments on the results.

Part B:  Discuss a few other methods to avoid this risk – with the constraint that the gutter cleaner remains on the ground while accomplishing the cleaning task.   One or two methods should be briefly discussed.

As this is your first exposure to this software, you may work in groups of up to three to do this problem set.  The software should be in the engineering (Jacobs) ICL and in the BME lab.  Due 9/22/2004, start of class, 10 points total.

9/22/2004 no attendance, no homework - graduate & professional schools discussion.

#5.  9/29/2004 - Reliability & Testing Lecture

        - use Flash player > Version 7   (eLMS will test for your version and will provide to link to download page for the player if you need it. >
        - turn off blocking that prevents popup windows from opening.  The eLMS needs these windows to deliver its courseware.

2.  After logging in, you should see a menu of courseware with only one item.  The list will contain either "EngineeringSurvey" or "EngineeringSurvey1". Please launch this item and complete it by November 19.   The activity sound take approximately 20 minutes to complete.

#12 12/1/2004 - Dr David Owens' talk on teamwork: the homework exercise is posted in his PowerPoint presentation, which is linked off  of the schedule page.  This exercise is due at the beginning of class on 12/8/2004.

Grading:  It is anticipated that 12 of the 15 sessions will have a homework assignment worth 10 points each.  Your grade based upon homework alone will be your total points divided by 110 points.  This allows for one missing homework.

This grade will be modified by an attendance grade, if deemed appropriate by the instructors.  The attendance grade will be computed using a correction factor = (.95)**(number of absences -1), this value not to exceed 1.0.   This allows for one "free" absence.   Excused absences must be allowed by the current instructor (King.)

Your overall grade will be the homework grade as modified by this correction factor.
