Education:
B.S. in Biomedical Engineering, NC State University 2007

Research:

Optical stimulation of the efferent vagus nerve: a novel treatment for the suppression of the inflammatory response

My research focuses on applying the benefits of optical stimulation to evoke and control a physiological response.  I am demonstrating this principle by optically stimulating the efferent vagus nerve of rats experiencing lethal endotoxaemia.

Personal Bio:

Austin is currently in his first year of graduate studies at Vanderbilt.  He was born and raised in Raleigh, NC where he also attended North Carolina State University (Go Wolfpack!).  When not doing research and coursework, Austin enjoys playing/watching baseball (Go Yankees!), college basketball, golf, hunting/fishing (or anything else outside), and playing guitar and piano.  Austin is currently pursuing his Masters Degree as a part of the Biomedical Optics team, and plans to continue beyond the Masters in pursuit of his Ph.D.  Austin will be happily married as of February 28, 2009.
