1. Use of Notebook a. Notebook bound b. Pages signed, witnessed & dated c. No blank pages or areas in middle of text d. Cross outs with single line e. Non-erasable ink f. Original record of work & copies permanently attached g. Legible table of contents & indication of continued pages h. Explanation of abbreviations and acronyms.
2. Experiments properly documented a. Purpose b. Equipment (mfg, model number and serial umber and the last calibration date) c. Chemical (lot #) and other supplies you used d. Methods and procedures e. Observations recorded f. Calculations done in notebook g. Units provided
3. Site Visits properly documented a. Visit Purpose (clear statement of what you hope to learn) b. Participants c. Equipment/Environment examined (location, include mfg, model number where possible) d. Procedures i. Questions to be investigated ii. Planned observations e. Recorded answers to questions & observations f. Photographs taken g. Results summary & interpretation
4. Research (web, electronic databases, library, phone calls, etc.) properly documented a. Questions researched b. Methods of research c. Listing of results obtained d. Bibliography of documents obtained
5. Personal thoughts and questions related to project recorded
6. Self Assessment – critical assessment of performance in carrying out 2, 3 & 4 above, your independent contribution to course, and skills learned.

Grade Assignment Criteria
A grade:
Essentially proper use of notebook
B grade:
Only minor problems in each area
Significant problems in one area
C grade:
Significant problems in two or more areas
D grade:
Significant problems in more than two areas
F grade:
Notebook not used
Notebook used grossly incorrectly
Primary purpose of this notebook is not to only record your class notes but to provide a record of all activities.
Failure to: use Table of Contents
record all activities outside of class
document all meetings, research, conversations
generate questions or ideas based on experience
complete a self-assessment
RULE: If not present in notebook, assumption is it was not done.
RULE: Every activity in class or out of class should be documented.
RULE: Every activity related to the project should be entered both in the ToC and the body.
RULE: Loose materials need to be permanently attached.
