Senior Design Project -- Spring 2002

Prototype/Key Deliverable

XXEN 147 Senior Design Project

Due: 1:00 PM, May 2, 2002

(to Project Advisor)

The second semester “prototype” or “key deliverable” is the culmination of your team’s efforts in the product design.  This deliverable should be used to verify that your design performs at least as well as you previously specified (in the proposal submitted at the end of last semester).  It also will provide you with a “prop” to use in your oral presentation(s).  This prop should communicate the form, function, and performance of your designed solution.  It should represent the best realization of your design that could be fabricated with the budget available to your team and should provide your customer(s) a clear indication of overall performance.

The majority of the projects involve the design of something physical.  For these projects, concept form, function, and performance are best communicated using a physical realization of the design.  In some cases it may not be possible or practical to fabricate a physical realization of the design.  In these cases, a computer simulation may suffice.  Remember, however, that the objective for this “prototype/key deliverable” is to effectively demonstrate that the design satisfies customer needs.

For projects that do not involve the design of something physical (e.g., software), the function of the concept must be communicated and demonstrated.  The most effective means of accomplishing this will depend on the type of project and should be carefully selected by the team.  Once again, remember that the objective for this deliverable is to effectively demonstrate that the design satisfies customer needs.
